Introduction

Academics, as important as they are, only make up a portion of your university experience. What you do outside of your courses—the clubs, volunteer opportunities, events, research or work positions you fill your calendar with—can have a huge impact.   – From the course home page

University is about so much more than what happens in the classroom. Everything that a student gets involved without outside the classroom, from the clubs they join, the volunteer opportunities they find, the sports they play, and the events they attend, play a large role in their experience. In this topic, we give students an opportunity to explore those extracurricular activities.

This topic contains three activities:

    • Reflect on your areas of interest
    • Choose a few involvement opportunities to explore once on campus
    • Determine your next steps to getting involved at UVic

What is the UVic experience?

This activity encourages students consider getting involved on campus, and emphasizes some of the benefits of involvement, including that it can help you answer four major questions. What are my interests?

Involvement is often thought about as just student clubs, but in reality it’s so much more than that. Students can work and volunteer on- or off-campus, can play intramurals, can contribute to research, can attend campus events… the list goes on. In this activity, we wanted to open students minds to all the different opportunities available to them, and provide them with ‘next steps’ for getting involved with an opportunity.

Learning outcomes: Students who complete this activity will begin to:

  • Reflect on your areas of interest
  • Choose a few involvement opportunities to explore once on campus
  • Determine your next steps to getting involved at UVic
